I’ve lived in my home for a little over 9 years. Just last year I started to really embrace my home. JUST LAST YEAR. By that I mean, truly in my heart, I’m grateful for it.
Back story, my husband and I purchased our town home and closed four days before we wed. We did not expect a town home, but it was move in ready and what we could find at the time. We were both living at home still and obviously wanted to be living together once we were married. Our thought was, “this is our starter home”. Well, nine years later, two kids, high interest rates, one income, etc.…it might become our forever home.
It sounds cheesy, but I’m so grateful to have a roof over my head. It may not be the newest and most updated, but it’s full of love. Some things that helped me to embrace the den I have:
1. Stop living, “in the next house.”!
My husband and I for years talked about “in the next house”. We lived more for our future than our present. It’s okay to dream about a bigger (or smaller) home, 3 car garage, bigger backyard, or whatever it is you desire! The problem is when it holds you back. I really liked our house when we moved in. A couple kids later, space is limited. My husband and I over the past few years had conversations about starting to live more in the present and changing our mind set.
2. Start making your home feel cozy!
Fill your home with things you love. Pictures, throw pillows, art, whatever! Don’t get me wrong, I decorated my home with pictures of family and friends and other décor when we moved in. I held myself back from adding more because I always felt that I would be moving anyways so why bother? I began to add more things to our home to make it feel more like “us”. I updated pictures, put holes in our walls (to hang pictures and décor), house plants amongst other things. Make it your own!
3. Stop being self-conscious about your home size!
My husband and I LOVE having company. You wouldn’t believe it because we never have anyone over. I always worried if it would be too crowded. Where would anyone sit? I told myself that no one wants to be in a small home on top of each other. Did anyone ever make me feel like this? Not at all. Last year, I had a few get-togethers and it turned out fine! I just can’t hold 50 people here. It would be insane! But I’m not holding myself back from having anyone over like I once was before.
4. Declutter!
I am in no way perfect! You know, I do embrace mess at times, but if you have a smaller home it does help to determine between wants and needs. Occasionally I do a total purge. I go through toys, clothes, and in general, rooms in our home and donate/get rid of things! I evaluate the item and whether I need it or if I will use/need it in the future.
These are just a few ideas that really helped me embrace my den. Hope it helps!
